    Troncon recalled by Azzurri

    Tuesday 23rd January 2007

Troncon - 86 up for Italy.

Veteran scrum-half Alessandro Troncon is the surprise inclusion in the Italy squad for their Six Nations opener.

Troncon made his Azzurri debut in 1994 and has gone on to represent his country on 85 occasions, but last appeared in Rome - ironically against France - in March 2005.

Coach Pierre Berbizier has opted for an experienced squad for the match, also calling upon Denis Dallan of Stade Français in the backs.

Dallan is one of a four-strong contingent from the Paris club, while only nine of the 24 players play their rugby for an Italian team.

Andrea Masi of Biarritz is also back in the side after a long absence and return to form from injury at Biarritz.

Fabio Ongaro looks set to play at hooker, despite getting limited game-time at Saracens, and the side will be led by Gloucester's Marco Bortolami

Italy squad: Mauro Bergamasco and Mirco Bergamasco (Stade Francais), Valerio Bernabo (Calvisano), Marco Bortolami (Gloucester, captain), Gonzalo Canale (Clermont-Auvergne), Martin Castrogiovanni (Leicester Tigers), Denis Dallan (Stade Francais), Roland De Marigny (Calvisano), Santiago Dellape (Biarritz), Carlo Festuccia, Paul Griffen (Calvisano), Andrea Lo Cicero (L'Aquila), Andrea Masi (Biarritz), Carlos Nieto (Gloucester), Fabio Ongaro (Saracens), Sergio Parisse (Stade Francais), Salvatore Perugini (Toulouse), Ramiro Pez (Bayonne), Kaine Robertson (Viadana), Andrea Scanavacca (Calvisano), Josh Sole (Viadana), Alessandro Troncon (Clermont-Auvergne), Maurizio Zaffiri (Calvisano), Alessandro Zanni (Calvisano).

Ready for action once more: Jonny Wilkinson

England's Six Nations preparations have been hit by a string of injuries, but new coach Brian Ashton has received encouraging signs that Jonny Wilkinson is on track for a return to the national side.

Wilkinson took part in the first day of a two-day England training session at Twickenham on Tuesday and his club Newcastle revealed that they are hopeful the star fly-half will be able to start Saturday's English Premiership match against Leicester.

If Wilkinson comes through that encounter unscathed - which is a big 'if' given his recent injury record - he will be in line to return to play for England for the first time since kicking the match-winning drop goal in the 2003 World Cup final against Australia.

Wilkinson, who has been recovering from a lacerated kidney, the latest in a string of injuries that have blighted his career since the World Cup, said earlier this month that he did not expect to be ready to return to the international stage in time for the Six Nations opener against Scotland on February 3.

But Newcastle's director of rugby, John Fletcher, indicated that he could be involved in top-level action this weekend.

"He did some contact stuff last week and will be back soon," Fletcher said.

"He's away with England until Wednesday but I will keep in touch with him and we'll decide from there whether he will play against Leicester.

"He's in full training and he's been passed fit by the medics to get involved with contact and collision. In terms of physical shape he couldn't be any fitter. He just needs to play."

Ashton could be tempted to rush Wilkinson into action as soon as possible as England are currently short of experience in the number ten shirt, Wilkinson's successor, Charlie Hodgson, having been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Ashton is likely to have his options reduced in other areas after a string of players dropped out of all or part of his first full-scale session with the squad.

Former skipper Jason Robinson and wings Mark Cueto and Paul Sackey are all doubtful for the Scotland match after being sent back to their clubs for treatment on neck, calf and knee injuries respectively.

Phil Vickery, who has taken over from Martin Corry as England captain following the appointment of Ashton, missed Tuesday's session with an ankle problem, as did Louis Deacon (knee) and Magnus Lund (calf).

Hooker Steve Thompson, who is carrying a neck injury, and Bristol scrum-half Shaun Perry (sore ribs) saw their involvement restricted, while first-choice prop Julian White aggravated a knee injury but will stay with the squad.

Robinson, 32, was a surprise inclusion in Ashton's first training squad after being persuaded to come out of international retirement in the wake of the new coach taking over from Andy Robinson last month.

The Sale Sharks star missed his club's European Cup defeat to the Ospreys at the weekend and will also sit out this Saturday's Premiership clash with Gloucester.

Sale coach Kingsley Jones admitted: "For Jason to go straight in against Scotland after not playing for two weeks is a big ask but that will be England's call."

The injuries to Cueto and Sackey could force Ashton to consider recalling World Cup-winning wing Ben Cohen or James Simpson-Daniel, both of whom were left out of his original squad.

The new England coach faces a tough task in trying to turn England's fortunes around. Robinson was sacked as head coach and Corry stripped of the captaincy after a disastrous November series featuring defeats at the hands of New Zealand, Argentina and South Africa.

Under Robinson, England lost 13 out of 22 Tests and dropped to seventh in the world rankings. They have finished fourth in the last two Six Nations tournaments.
