Team MD's Peter McGough, Dan Solomon & Shawn Ray preview the competition & the Kai Greene situation at the 2015 Mr. Olympia contest.
PHIL HEATH He is unbeatable because I know what the other guys are capable of bringing and I know what Phil is going to bring. Do I think Phil is going to be better than his best in 2011? I don’t know. He’s gotten bigger since 2011 but I don’t think he has progressively gotten better. But no one is capable of bringing the all-around conditioning, the lines, the thin skin and the detail that Phil Heath brings. You could sit there and say Kai Greene has a chance, but we’ve seen that battle. We can say Dennis Wolf stands a chance, and again we’ve seen that battle. We have seen Shawn Rhoden’s capabilities and if he won last year, I would not have been disappointed. Big Ramy is a big question mark, but he cannot challenge Phil Heath or these top guys with what he has brought so far, unless he really alters his whole approach and mindset. He must make major changes to the physique that won the Arnold Brasil in May, or he is not going to beat any of the top guys.
KAI GREENE (Interview conducted before Greene’s withdrawal from contest) I think age may be a factor with Kai. How long can you train at your peak? He’s 40, a couple of years younger than me, but he started training at 16, way before me. Shawn Rhoden is the same age as Kai but he’s fresher because he hasn’t logged the same amount of training years: Shawn actually had seven years off from 2002. Kai maybe had his best opportunity last year. That was the biggest open door he is ever going to get, and he didn’t walk through it. I think he will try and play the size game. I believe Kai is too big for his height. He needs to trim down. We always hear these astronomical poundage numbers, but at 5’8” he’s putting on too much mass for his frame. And he needs bigger delts. He has huge arms, but standing next to Phil, he loses out on delts— Phil is wider than him. If I were him, I would be training my shoulders a lot harder to try to get more cap there. But again, the age factor comes up. At 40, the first thing to start going for me was the delt caps. I just do not believe that someone who is continually beating up the muscles and tearing them down, and then trying to get into contest shape, can maintain that crazy muscle forever. I believe that for the bigger guys, it is just hard to continue to peak time and time again, throughout a career.
DENNIS WOLF I said in 2012 that Dennis was going to be the surprise of the show, and he still has that capability to slide into that second spot. He’s been unable to keep his fullness throughout the prejudging, and flattens out as the contest progresses. He’s still figuring it out. Remember, he is one of the only guys who doesn’t work with a coach. He is really still learning his body, but I told Dennis three years ago, when he was 33, that he would break through. I said, “Dennis, you are getting it together. I am telling you. I know from experience, because I hit my stride when I got to be 34, 35, 36, 37 — those are your prime years. You are going to see that the more you learn, the easier it is.” I would say Dennis Wolf is probably the most dedicated athlete of any of the Olympia guys. I know he lives, breathes and sleeps bodybuilding. He does nothing else. And he trains harder than anyone else, apart from Branch Warren. Dennis Wolf is a bodybuilder’s bodybuilder. I think Dennis can nail down the second spot, because he has that overwhelming size. He has got the shoulder width, which a lot of guys do not have. He has got the full bellies and the big legs, and he just looks great in the lineup. He just needs to maintain that fullness and carry it through prejudging.
SHAWN RHODEN I’ve never seen him bigger than he was earlier in the year and he wasn’t in bad condition. He has improved his chest and back, which were his two weak points. His legs are world class. He has the smallest waist on the stage. He has got wide shoulders. Can he be bigger in the upper torso? Yes. Do I see him beating Phil Heath? No. Shawn has been consistent. We have been looking for him to improve and build a little more fullness and depth—meaning turning to the side; he needs more density. He does not have the wild muscle bellies that a Phil Heath has or a Kai Greene has, but he has got better proportions. He has conditioning that really could spell danger for any of these top guys. I see him anywhere between second and fourth.
DEXTER JACKSON He is just one of these guys who you can overlook and then he shows up and you are like, shit, I forgot about Dexter. I spend a bit of time in Venice these days and see Dexter regularly, and he is the biggest I have ever seen him. I would not be shocked if Dexter Jackson placed second at this Olympia. He is the closest one to Phil’s physique as far as knockout-quality muscle. He has conditioning and he has got the lines. He is not the biggest guy, but he is not going to get lost in the shuffle of big guys because he has such crazy proportions. He’s 45, but age is not really a factor with him. With anyone else, I would sit here and say he is too old. I would be an idiot to sit here and count Dexter Jackson out. I will go on record to say that Dexter Jackson is probably the most dangerous guy besides Phil Heath in the lineup. Do not count the guy out. I do not see the guy fading. I know he is hungry. I know he said he was going to quit soon, but I don’t know if that will happen. I told him he would be crazy to retire, because no new guys are coming through to put him down the rankings.
BIG RAMY Well, we were all amazed when he won the New York Pro in 2013, after only training three years and being so huge. But you know, it’s 2015 and we’re still waiting for another giant leap forward for him? He is relatively new to competing, and he is going to have to figure out his prep. As of now, we tend to hear talk about Big Ramy being a contender to win Mr. Olympia. Yes, he is going to get a crazy ovation. Yes, he will have the best shots onstage with front and side poses, but he has to turn around and show so much more detail so that we say, “Wow, he has really improved and he is going to demolish this guy or that guy.” Right now, he has not really proven he can do that. Having said that, he is the only guy I feel who could go and build an aura to be the most in-demand guest poser and be paid top dollar and bring in massive crowds, because they just want to stare at the guy. Hell, I cannot look at the guy enough. I just cannot believe the proportions he has, but he needs to nail condition. He has got to bring it in enough that he can get into that top-four mix.
BRANCH WARREN Branch Warren is very dangerous because he brings the conditioning. You can say things about his physique, but every time you count this guy out, he makes a fool of you. I would say on current form, Branch would beat Big Ramy because his conditioning is better, and that counts on the Olympia stage.
JUSTIN COMPTON MIA Justin Compton could stand there and do battle with all of these guys, but he chose not to do the show, which I think is a crazy mistake. He was too big at the Arnold, but if he learns from that I would love to see him in the Olympia.
JAY’S TOP FOUR I could not tell you in what order they will place, because it’s like cutting hairs with all of those guys. They all have special qualities and they all have disadvantages when standing next to each other. It all comes down to condition. The real battle is going to be for second place between Shawn Rhoden, Dexter Jackson, Kai Greene and Dennis Wolf. That is going to be the show that people are going to want to watch. Any of them could be second.
