Titta Di Girolamo è un salernitano che da otto anni vive una vita grigia e monotona all'interno dell'albergo in cui alloggia a Lugano, in Svizzera, costantemente in attesa di un segnale che, quando arriva, lo trasforma in uno scrupoloso uomo d'affari. I giorni trascorrono lenti nella rigida sequenza di azioni precalcolate che ormai sono la routine abituale dell'uomo, compresa la mano a carte con una coppia di ricchi decaduti e la dose settimanale di eroina. Un giorno però, da freddo calcolatore, Titta inizia a scomporsi, fino ad arrivare a parlare alla signorina del bar, Sofia (che da tempo tenta di sedurlo), ricordando a se stesso di "non sottovalutare le conseguenze dell'amore".
