        ...ecco ancora qualche cosa...
        Peru's Maca Arouses Interest
        Chris Kilham

In the South American country of Peru, a legendary plant passed down from the Inca shows all the signs of becoming a botanical success story and popular product. That plant is maca, reputed for centuries to enhance energy, libido and sexual function.

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is an annual plant that produces a radish-like tuber. Little is known about the origins of maca, but the plant is believed to have been cultivated in the Junin plateau of Peru's central highlands as far back as 2,000 years ago. During the Incan empire, maca was so highly revered for its purported energy- and libido-enhancing properties, it was used as currency. Legend has it that Incan warriors would consume maca before entering into battle. Today, maca is an Andean crop grown exclusively in Peru's Junin Plateau at elevations between 10,000 and 15,000 feet.

According to medical doctors in Lima, maca is becoming increasingly popular in Peru among native and non-native people, and market demand for maca is on the rise in Japan, Europe and the United States. Peruvian maca cultivation is on the increase, spurred on by government experts and agencies thet are actively promoting maca agriculture and development. In the markets of Peru, maca is sold for its strengthening and stamina-promoting effects, to improve sexual function and as a fertility enhancer. Locals promote maca as a laxative (probably because of its fiber content), and drugstores in Lima sell maca in capsules for stamina and improved sexual function.

The center of maca commerce in the highlands is Cerro de Pasco. There, at almost 15,000 feet, you can find a plethora of maca products, including whole maca, maca flour for baking, maca seeds for planting, maca baked goods, a fresh fermented drink called maca chicha and a distilled maca liquor. You also can purchase maca blender drinks, another common way to consume maca.

        Maca Nutrition
Dried maca weighs in at about 59 percent carbohydrate, and has a protein value of slightly more than 10 percent. It has a higher lipid content than other root crops at 2.2 percent, of which linoleic acid, palmitic acid and oleic acid are the primary fatty acids. Maca is also a rich source of sterols, including sitosterol, campesterol, ergosterol, brassicasterol and ergostadienol. From a mineral standpoint, maca exceeds both potatoes and carrots in value and is a good source of iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium and iodine.

What nutrients in maca promote its reputed libido-enhancing effects? The plant sterols may be responsible, as may be isothiocyanates discovered in the root. Maca contains benzyl thiocyanate and p-methoxybenzyl isothiocyanate. Though these compounds occur in small amounts, they may enhance fertility. But two recently discovered groups of compounds, the macamides and the macaenes—discovered by Qun Yi Zheng, Ph.D., at PureWorld Botanicals—appear to be the likely agents responsible for maca's enhancement of libido and sexual function.

        Maca's Effects Validated
Claims that maca enhances energy, libido and sexual function have been corroborated in animal experiments conducted at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine using standardized maca extract provided by PureWorld. Rodents fed maca extract demonstrated increased energy, and exhibited a dramatic increase in sexual activity as compared with non maca-fed animals. Not only did healthy animals respond well to maca extract, but rodents with low testosterone demonstrated a significant increase in sexual activity, indicating a possibility that men with low testosterone or erectile dysfunction may experience improvement. In the studies, the greater the concentration of macamides and macaenes in the extract fed to the animals, the greater their strength, libido and sexual function. In toxicity studies conducted in at Product Safety Labs of East Brunswick, N.J., maca showed absolutely no toxicity, and no adverse pharmacologic effects. The results of recent maca studies are so significant that they have been accepted for publication in the April 2000 issue of the peer-reviewed medical journal Urology. Publication in this journal is sure to fuel maca's success as a dietary supplement.

                Bye.
